Odantapuri (also known as Odantapura or Uddandapura) was a famous Buddhist Mahavihara in Bihar, India. It is thought that Gopala I, the founder of the Pala dynasty of the Bihar and Bengal regions, founded it in the eighth century.Odantapuri was one of five Mahaviharas spread over eastern India - Nalanda, Vikramashila, Somapura, and Jagaddala were the others. Odantapuri had roughly twelve thousand pupils at its peak in the eighth century, according to Tibetan accounts. When a Turko-Muslim conqueror named Muhammad Bin Bakhtiyar Khalji led repeated invasions on Bihar and neighbouring lands in the late 1100s, the vihara was destroyed. Tibetan Buddhists looked forward to Odantapuri as a model and source of inspiration. According to Tibetan accounts, the Sam-Ye (Bsam-Yas) monastery was patterned after it in 749, and numerous illustrious Tibetan academics studied there.
